BURLINGTON, Vt. — The Vermont Green Building Network (VGBN) is now accepting submissions for its fifth annual, statewide competition that recognizes residential and commercial buildings that have demonstrated energy-efficient performance through the design and operation of their buildings.

Vermont’s Greenest Awards Competition was established in 2012 to recognize buildings that demonstrate high-energy performance while optimizing energy systems and appliances designed to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce carbon footprints.

Commercial projects that wish to be considered must be located in Vermont, occupy less than 5,000 square feet and be able to demonstrate low energy intensity for at least one year. Projects must also highlight strategies, appliances and energy systems that were used to lower the building’s energy dependence.

“Last year’s greenest building used about 90 percent less energy than the regional average for commercial buildings and 80 percent less than average for residential,” said Jennifer Chiodo, president of VGBN’s board of directors in a statement released by VGBN. “It is truly inspiring to see these great examples of low energy intensity buildings in a cold climate like Vermont.”

In 2015 the Vermont State Employees Credit Union (VSECU), built by Barre, Vt.-based EF Wall & Associates Inc. and designed by Montpelier, Vt.-based Gossens Bachman Architects received the ‘Going Green’ award for incorporating spray-foamed walls, fiberglass windows and an electric water heater into the building’s design.

Another building that received an honorable mention in 2015 was 124 Technology Park Way, built by South Burlington, Vt.-based ReArch Company and designed by Alberta, Canada-based S2 Architecture. The building was recognized for its highly efficient mechanical systems, recycled construction materials and open spaces filled with natural light.
“The diversity of award winners helps us understand what is achievable in reducing consumption while maintaining comfort and creating beautiful spaces,” said Chiodo in a statement from VGBN.

Submissions for this year’s competition are due on March 10. Award winners will be announced at the Vermont Green Building Gala on March 30, at Main Street Landing in Burlington, Vt.
