Warden Leroy Kirkegard, who is responsible for Montana State Prison facilities in Deer Lodge, Great Falls, Glendive and Shelby, is retiring in April. Kirkegard was first appointed warden in November 2011, prior to which he served the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Detention Services Division for 19 years as a correctional officer, sergeant, lieutenant, captain and ultimately deputy chief. He also managed the department’s Staff Operations Bureau and served as a liaison to the Nevada Department of Corrections. Kirkegard spent a decade serving in the U.S. Air Force and holds an associate’s degree in criminal justice from New Mexico State University as well as a bachelors’ degree in criminal justice from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
